Signed up to take a class at South Seattle College. It’s called Wine Tasting Primer: Sight, Smell, Taste - Learn how to taste wine knowledgeably to accurately describe what you are tasting. In this beginner's class, your instructor, Dieter Schafer - Certified Educator and Sommelier, introduces you to wine types, grapes, varietals, and many wine regions, as well as the basics of reading a wine label. Gain hints for smart buying, proper storing, and aging. The class also includes a discussion of wine-and-food pairing guidelines. Tastings at each session.

I’ve wrangled Jeremy into doing with me, but he hasn’t signed up yet. Looking forward to learning something new.

11/16/18 We went to our first of three classes this Tuesday and I thought Jeremy was going to hate it because the teacher is a wee bit slow of speech, but he said he learned more about wine in that one class than ever before. So that sounds pretty good. We had five tastings and learned about terroir which I had never heard of. We learned that there are certain regions where each grape is grown best and that is where you will find the best wine for that variety. Of course my favorite was the Riesling. I will say I think red wine drinkers are a wee bit snooty. They make it seem like if you don’t like red wine, then there is something wrong with you or you aren’t a real wine drinker. It is never said outright, but always implied. “I started with a white and then I went on to the good stuff.” Things like that.

We are supposed to have homework. We certainly have plenty of wine so lots of opportunities to get it done. Again, I’d rather eat my calories. We are going to visit friends in Portland this weekend. Maybe we will take some wine and have them do homework too.
